Merak Sakteng Trek

Merak Sakteng Trek is one of the beautiful treks in Bhutan will surely give you memorable experiences. The Merak and Sakteng region is a semi nomadic region in east Bhutan situated over 3,500 meters / 11,482 feet inhabited by Brokpas people; a nomadic tribe. The region of Merak and Sakteng is a lot rich in terms on natural diversity and magnificent scenery. The Brokpas people of the region are believed to came from Tsona; a village in southern Tibet. These people move to low land valleys in the winter and rejoin higher pastures during summer. Brokpas communities still follows the barter system plus cow / yak cheese, butter and dried meat trading. The Merak and Sakteng region was opened for tourists only after 2010AD so the region is still virgin. This adventure will give you opportunity to visit both Merak and Sakteng region and gives you ample chances to enjoy the interesting cultures of this traditional ethnic tribes. The Merak and Sakteng village is known as 'twins of the east Bhutan'.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Paro [2,280M], sightseeing around the town in the afternoon

Day 02: Morning walk to Taktsang monastery also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery, in Paro

Day 03: Drive to Gangtey valley [3,000M / 9,843FT]

Day 04: Drive to Bumthang [2,600M / 8,530FT]

Day 05: Drive to Tashigang [1,100M / 3,608FT]

Day 06: Drive to Chaling [2,150M / 7,053FT], trek to Damnongchu [3,090M / 10,137FT]

Day 07: Trek to Merak [3,500M / 11,482FT]

Day 08: Cross Nagchungla Pass [4,100M / 13,451FT] and trek to Miksa Teng [2,860M / 9,383FT]

Day 09: Trek to Sakteng [3,000M / 9,842FT]

Day 10: Exploration day at Sakteng village

Day 11: Trek to Jyonkhar Teng [1,860M / 6,102FT]

Day 12: Trek to Phongmay [1,980M / 6,496FT], drive to Tashigang [1,100M / 3,608FT]

Day 13: Drive to Bumthang [2,600M / 8,530FT]

Day 14: Drive to Punakha [1,200M / 3,937FT]

Day 15: Drive back to Paro [2,280M], visit around if time permits

Day 16: Rest day in Paro, visit around the town, shopping etc.

Day 17: Departure back to home
